Frenquently Asked Questions
What if I have never backpacked before?
A 3-4 day backpacking trip on the Appalachian Trail is perfect for the first time adventurer. We have trips designed for all skill levels. We will teach you the basics along the way. Most groups have a mix of beginners and wilderness veterans so we are all learning together. Every new adventure requires a first step…this could be the first step of a life-long journey! What kinds of food will we eat?
The food kits are great! Before each trip, you get to sort through a variety of meals and snacks. You will be given a balance of dehydrated backpacking meals and custom-made backcountry dishes. Pasta, rice, and beans are easily prepared in the wilderness. There is something for every taste. You are encouraged to bring your own drink mixes and condiments. If you have a favorite ‘comfort food’ bring it along – it might be a good trading item on the trail! What is a typical day on the trail?
The wilderness is all about the unexpected so plans can and do change through the trip. We start with a daily schedule and go from there. Most days start with breakfast and a morning devotion then we break camp. Everyone usually hikes in smaller groups of 2-3 people moving at a similar pace, stopping for breaks and lunch along the trail. After arriving in camp for the night, we gather wood, build a big fire, and discuss the day’s topic over a hearty dinner. How physically fit do I need to be?
The daily mileages are designed to be challenging but possible for a wide range of hikers. Even at a slow pace, you will make it to camp with plenty of time to set up and enjoy the evening activities. Typical pack weight is usually around 40 pounds but never more than 30% of your body weight. Of course, a little pre-trip conditioning goes a long way! It will not be easy every step of the way but you can do this! And you will be glad you did!Do we still go if it is raining (or in the forecast)?
All of the trips are rain or shine…or snow! Part of the adventure is dealing with the unexpected. Expect the unexpected. If rain is in the forecast, we will add a few small tarps to the packing list to give us a protected community area for cooking. Sometimes a little weather is just what we need!Is there cell phone coverage?
Maybe, but don’t count on it! Cell service is spotty to non-existent in most areas we travel. These expeditions are designed to help you unplug from the matrix of our usual distractions. Turn off the phone and e-mail for a few days, close your eyes and really listen to the here and now. When was the last time you went a whole day without talking on the phone? What gear do I need?
You will be given a complete gear list and check sheet suitable for the adventure and the time of year. You are encouraged to bring your own equipment but many items are available for loan at no additional cost (packs, tents, cooking equipment, etc). You do not need to spend a lot to get good gear.A 3-4 day backpacking trip on the Appalachian Trail is perfect for the first time adventurer. We have trips designed for all skill levels.
